Type As Image

This project focuses on transforming type to create a new meaning to a word through its form. I was given the three words: “means, when, and for.”

Because I was working mainly on the computer during the brainstorming stage, I decided to work analog and sketch the type on tracing paper. I wanted to find different ways to distort, extend, photograph, etc. the type while keeping the meaning of each word in mind. I also experimented with photography and took different close-up shots of texture I found.

I found using a scanner to create to be extremely fun because the results are unpredictable. To get the perfect scan, I had to make more than 50 scans.

FINAL

Once I found a set of images that I found to be visually interesting, I photographed them off the screen and overlaid color onto them using photoshop. By photographing off the screening three to four times, the images got brighter and the contrast got higher. Overlaying color onto all the images seemed redundant so I experimented with different blend options and during the process, I learned more about what Photoshop provides.
