Jasper Wong Talk
This project was about creating a poster for a past guest speaker at CCA. Along with designing a poster for the speaker event, we chose an artist to be inspired by throughout the project. I chose the guest speaker, Jasper Wong, and was inspired by Na Kim’s process of design.
During the beginning of this project, I focused on learning more about Na Kim, her background in design, the process in which she works, her stylistic patterns, etc. to get an insight into how she goes about a project. I was particularly inspired by her installation piece, “2’ 13”, 4.6 meters.”
Inspired by her process, way of thinking, love of shapes, and simple color palette, I chose to create a painting based on the song “Just the Two of Us” by Bill Withers and Grover Washington Jr. Before painting, I created a list of rules for myself that would help me paint without any thoughts of layout or design. For example, when the melody goes up, I would draw a right triangle that slants to the top right corner, vibrato, I would draw zigzagged lines, etc.
I chose to use the painting I created as a base for the text layout. At times, when a circle would appear on the painting, I would put a letter from the speaker event on top of the shape.

ANIMATION & COLOR
I moved forward with three poster ideas and animated them in different ways. The letters would appear at random times, the color of the overall poster would change every 5 seconds, or smaller posters would overlap others. I wanted the animations to represent Jasper Wong’s message: take chances and your art will pop.
I chose colors based on his works as well. By screenshotting different portions of his works and creating color palettes based on each work, I was able to decide on a color scheme that would pop out and relate to his works.

TYPEFACE
To incorporate more of Jasper Wong’s illustrative styles into the poster by changing the letters into mini characters. I created two versions of the poster, one without animated lettering and the other with, but they both looked too compact and simple.
I also changed the typeface because my previous poster drafts were too simple and blocky. Bulb is a bubbly typeface that closely resembles the illustrations Jasper Wong draws in many of his works.

People could view the poster while waiting for the bus.
Since Jasper Wong is a mural artist, he could inspire younger, underground artists.
